DDA compliant hardware meets the accessibility standards required under Australia's Disability Discrimination Act. For door hardware, that means complying with AS 1428.1-2021, the standard covering design for access and mobility in new building work. It ensures doors can be operated safely by everyone, including people with limited hand strength or mobility. Section 10.4 (Door Controls) is the part most relevant to hardware selection.

Between the handle and the back plate or door face — measured at the centre grip section — you need a minimum of 35mm and a maximum of 45mm. Too close and users can't get their hand around it; too far and it fails compliance. This applies to lever handles and entrance pull handles alike.

Push buttons must be at least 25mm in diameter and sit proud of the surface — raised, not flush. The button must activate the door before it becomes level with the surrounding surface. Flush buttons are a common compliance failure, so check this carefully on automated openings.

Standard door controls should sit between 900mm and 1,100mm above finished floor level — measure from the finished floor, not the slab. This range is non-negotiable for compliance. Hardware also needs a minimum of 500mm clearance from an internal corner, which is easy to miss in tight corridors and doorways.
