Doorware Glossary

The term used for the horizontal distance from the face of the lock to the centre line of the cylinder, key hole or lever hub.

A key supplied with construction keyed locks. During construction, a builder gains entry using the construction key. On completion of the building, action is taken to render the construction key inoperative, preventing further entry by the builder.

A pin tumbler barrel activated by a key to operate locks.

A bolt which is operated manually and is not actuated by a spring, usually actuated by a key and cylinder. When locked the bolt cannot be returned by end pressure.

Centre to Centre (in mm) is the measurement between two fixing points and often applies to pull handles, blade pulls, cabinet handles and some bathware fittings. Particularly useful when needing to match pre-drilled holes.

A non-operating door handle which is installed for appearance or as a door pull only.

An electrical version of a mechanical lock which is able to be released by remote control.

Indicates that a product is designed or assembled for use only on right hand doors, or only on left hand doors, but not both.

A keying system suitable for apartments, flats, offices, hotels and motels. Each apartment, flat or office has its own key which will not operate the locks to another apartment, flat or office, but will operate the locks to communal entrances and service areas.

A key which will operate a group of locks, each built to operate on a different service key.

An opening made to receive a lock or other hardware.

A lock designed to be recessed into the edge of a door, rather than being mounted to its surface.

Overall product measurement, often referring to length (mm).

Indicates that a product is designed or assembled to rotate into the correct position for use on both left and right hand doors.

A door handle set without a lock - ususally with a latch and free from both sides, while each lever handle is paired with a rose or plate, and fitted to an internal door.

A term for locks used on bathroom and bedroom doors having an inside button or turn knob to lock the outside handle and usually an emergency function which will unlock the set from the outside.

A term for the front edge of a door which has a step, usually 13mm deep. Requires a rebated latch and strike.

Indicates that a product is designed or assembled to be adjusted by way of a removable screw into the correct position for use on both left hand and right hand doors.

A lock with components that can be readily adapted to enable the lock to suit doors of either hand, opening in or out.

The plate recessed in a door jamb into which the lock fits when the door is closed.

A bolt having a cylinder case requiring a bored (round) hole in the door edge rather than a chiselled rectangular mortice.
