Behind the Finish, Our 30-Year Journey

A finish is what you notice first. The warmth of brushed brass, the depth of weathered bronze, the quiet confidence of a lever that turns with precision. But the finish is never the whole story. What matters most is what sits behind it, the discipline, the capability, and the standards that make a detail feel inevitable in a finished space.

For Joseph Di Benedetto, that discipline began early. He grew up around architectural hardware, in a family business that imported award-winning door hardware and security technology from Italy through the 1970s. Before there was a showroom or a catalogue, there were boxes to unpack, stock to check, and long days watching raw material become something functional, durable, and beautiful.

Curiosity became craft. An engineer later taught Joseph the lathe, the milling machine, the guillotine, and the fundamentals of making things properly. It shaped a conviction that still guides the work today, if it can be imagined, it can be made, and it must be made right.

In the early years, the business was built by listening. Joseph would ride into the city with samples in a backpack and ask architects and designers one direct question, what is it that you can’t find. There was no range to push, no catalogue to hide behind, only a willingness to solve a real problem. A sketch would come back, a prototype would follow, and an idea would become a piece of hardware that could be held, tested, refined, and specified with confidence.

Designer Doorware was established in December 1996 in Melbourne to bring together manufacturing, engineering, and architectural hardware design under one roof. From those beginnings, the business grew into a dedicated architectural hardware specialist, expanding across Australia and into key international design markets, supporting projects from Melbourne and Sydney through to Beverly Hills and New York, alongside a global distributor network.

Through every stage of that growth, one principle has remained non-negotiable. We do not compromise on fit, finish, and function. We do not take shortcuts that reduce performance or longevity, even when the cheaper option is easier. And we do not treat hardware as an afterthought. Our work is consultative by nature because the best outcomes come from getting the specification right early and carrying that intent consistently through a project.

This is the meaning behind the title. Behind the Finish is the work behind the work, the prototyping, testing, refinement, quality control, and the operational discipline that makes the final detail feel effortless on site. It is also the collective effort of a team, designers, engineers, makers, and customer support specialists, all protecting the same standard, every day.

It is why process matters. We design, prototype, machine, polish, and finish with tight control over the details, so an idea can move quickly from concept to something tangible a designer can hold, assess, and specify. That speed, paired with precision, is rare in this category, and it is central to how we support architects and interior designers, not only with product, but with clarity, confidence, and continuity.
